Unique Festivals Around the World You Have to See

One of my favorite ways to experience a new culture is by attending its festivals. There's something special about immersing yourself in local traditions, dancing in the streets, and celebrating alongside people from around the world. Over the years, I’ve made it a goal to plan my travels around some of the most unique festivals, and let me tell you—it's been absolutely worth it! Here are some of the most incredible festivals that you have to experience at least once in your lifetime.

And of course, if you're planning to check any of these off your bucket list, WayAway can help you find the best flight deals, while Expedia and Vrbo make booking accommodations easy and stress-free.

1. Holi Festival – India

If you’ve ever dreamed of dancing through clouds of color, Holi is the festival for you! Celebrated in March, this Hindu festival of colors marks the arrival of spring. I was lucky enough to celebrate Holi in Jaipur, and it was one of the most joyful, chaotic, and beautiful experiences of my life. Be ready to get covered in bright powders and let loose with music, dancing, and traditional sweets!

2. La Tomatina – Spain

Imagine thousands of people in a massive food fight—but instead of anything, it's just tomatoes! Held in Buñol, Spain, La Tomatina is a hilarious, messy, and unforgettable experience. When I joined in, I ended up absolutely drenched in tomato pulp but couldn't stop laughing the entire time. If you want to be part of this crazy festival, make sure to book accommodations through Vrbo early—Buñol gets packed!

3. Oktoberfest – Germany

Beer lovers, this one's for you! Oktoberfest in Munich is the world’s largest beer festival, and it’s exactly as fun as it sounds. I spent a whirlwind weekend hopping from beer tent to beer tent, dressed in a traditional dirndl, drinking steins of beer, and singing along with locals. It’s an absolute must for anyone who loves a lively atmosphere, delicious food, and meeting new people.

4. Yi Peng Lantern Festival – Thailand

Out of all the festivals I’ve attended, the Yi Peng Lantern Festival in Chiang Mai is by far the most magical. Thousands of glowing lanterns float into the night sky, creating a breathtaking, almost otherworldly scene. The best part? Writing a wish on my lantern and watching it drift up into the stars. If you plan to go, book your flights through WayAway for the best prices, and stay in a cozy villa through Vrbo for the perfect getaway.

5. Carnival – Brazil

If you love vibrant costumes, samba dancing, and non-stop street parties, Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is the ultimate festival experience. I danced in the streets, watched the elaborate parades, and soaked in the electric energy of the city. It’s a week-long party like no other, and definitely one to add to your bucket list!

6. Day of the Dead – Mexico

Far from being a sad occasion, Día de los Muertos is a beautiful celebration of life and remembrance. I spent the holiday in Oaxaca, where streets were filled with marigold flowers, candlelit altars, and families celebrating their loved ones. If you ever get the chance, experiencing the mix of tradition, art, and heartfelt emotion is something you’ll never forget.

7. Harbin Ice Festival – China

Ever wanted to see a city built entirely of ice? The Harbin Ice Festival in China is exactly that—a winter wonderland of towering ice sculptures, glowing lights, and ice slides. I bundled up in layers and wandered through the frozen masterpieces, sipping hot drinks and feeling like I had stepped into another world. If you're a fan of winter adventures, this festival is a must!

8. Up Helly Aa – Scotland

Scotland takes Viking history to the next level with Up Helly Aa, an epic fire festival in Shetland. I stood in awe as hundreds of people dressed as Vikings marched through the streets carrying torches, then set a full-sized Viking ship on fire. It’s a spectacular sight and a great reason to visit Scotland in winter.

9. Songkran – Thailand

Another Thai festival that blew me away was Songkran, the Thai New Year celebration. Essentially, it’s a giant nationwide water fight. I grabbed a water gun and joined in as locals and tourists drenched each other in the streets. It’s the perfect way to beat the heat and celebrate a fresh start to the year!

10. Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta – USA

Watching hundreds of colorful hot air balloons rise over the desert at sunrise is an experience I’ll never forget. The Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta is the largest of its kind, and I even got the chance to ride in one. Floating above the world as the sun lit up the sky was truly breathtaking. If you’ve ever wanted to go up in a hot air balloon, this is the place to do it!

Attending festivals around the world has completely changed the way I travel. Each one offers a new way to connect with people, experience culture, and make lifelong memories.
